Job Description

As the Senior Accountant for VGM Insurance an individual is responsible for assisting the accounting/finance department with monthly financial close, monthly and quarterly financial reporting (internal/external), annual budgeting, and other special and ongoing tasks and projects. The Senior Accountant will assist Accounting Manager as needed which includes recognizing, participating in and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the underlying relevant finance and accounting business cycles for which the team is responsible. The Senior Accountant contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.

Responsibilities

These are the responsibilities expected of an applicant interested in this position.

  • Assist with the accurate and timely completion of divisional monthly, quarterly and year-end reconciliations, closings and financial statement preparation, including review of complex calculations and journal entries, and performance of financial statement analyses.
  • Regularly communicate and facilitate a close working relationship with Management, Bermuda Management, Bermuda Auditors, VGM’s: Actuary, Reinsurance Companies, Carriers, Banks and Brokers.
  • Produce the required Carrier reporting as required under contract and spontaneously requested.
  • Perform required reporting to Bermuda management company and assist as required with the annual Bermuda financial audit, statutory returns/reporting and tax filing.
  • Manage the accurate and timely preparation of multiple insurance related reporting requirements (reinsurance renewal/true-up, actuarial, Captive and Platinum).
  • Assist management with annual budget preparation, as well as monthly / quarterly forecasting activities.
  • Assist with Divisional and Company-wide special projects that will have a broad impact across the organization, including but not limited to internal control implementation, process improvements and business optimization, due diligence, data integrity initiatives, etc.
  • Develop and implement processes for monitoring and timely communication of financial and operational performance at the site level, analyzing, identifying and communicating areas for operational and financial improvement, and implement mechanisms for tracking of post-implementation results
  • Assist with identifying and remediate process and control deficiencies; update policies, procedures and process documentation; communicate process changes to team members affected.
  • Prepare and perform financial presentations for clients and management during site visits.
  • Compile and support external auditors' requests for information and documentation.
  • Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to meet these qualifications to be considered for this position.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CMA/CPA preferred
  • 2 years experience – public accounting experience a plus
  • Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  • Must pay close attention to details.
  • Must be able to work under stress, in a fast paced environment on a regular or continuous basis.
  • Strong Excel experience and attention to detail.
