VGM Insurance is seeking an Underwriter or Production Underwriter, with a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience underwriting and pricing property or package policies. Familiarity with ISO rating and coverage forms a plus. CPCU, AU, or ARM designation or working towards a designation is required.

Insurance underwriters analyze the risk factors on an insurance application. Using a variety of resources, underwriters make a judgement and determine whether to approve an applicant. Insurance underwriters must achieve a balance between risk, return, and growth.

Reports to:               VGM Insurance Services Vice President of Underwriting

Hours:                       Full-Time: Monday – Friday 8-5 PM+, travel at times required

Location:                  Waterloo, Iowa

Compensation:      Salary commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

These are the responsibilities expected of an applicant interested in this position.

Underwriting new business and renewal submissions for an assigned territory. Responsible for profitable growth and strong renewal retention, while working within your letter of authority and within the underwriting guidelines.  

  • Strong knowledge and experience of property insurance including: coverages, rating, terminology and technical procedures.
  • Experience in evaluating insurance risks submitted to determine eligibility, profitability and desirability to determine acceptance or rejection in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Calculate premiums, refunds, commissions, adjustments, and new reserve requirements, using insurance rate standards.
  • Must be sales driven, “people person” who likes to establish new relationships.
  • Work independently in a paperless environment within assigned territory, traveling as required.
  • Demonstrates professional, tactful negotiation skills.
  • Writing policies and adding specific conditions when required.and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to meet these qualifications to be considered for this position.

Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience underwriting and pricing property or package policies. Bachelor degree in business related field, or equivalent education. Familiarity with ISO rating and coverage forms a plus. CPCU, AU, or ARM designation or working towards a designation is required.
