Job Description

The President and Publisher supervises all essential activities and day to day operations as directed by the CEO of the VGM Group. As the President of United Publications an individual takes full responsibility and accountability for P&L, sales, marketing, editorial and circulation of a national business-to-business media company.

NOTE: The offices of VGM United Publications is based in Yarmouth, Maine. Individuals can be based in either Waterloo, Iowa or Yarmouth, Maine with travel to and from office locations as needed.

These are the responsibilities expected of an applicant interested in this position.

As the President of a VGM business unit one must be an influential leader devoted to the objective of making VGM a recognized business and thought leader. One is responsible for collecting, structuring, managing and prioritizing a wide range of business needs and tasks across the business unit.

In alignment with the business model of VGM, the President must be committed to successful business partnerships both externally and internally, through a client focused approach to forging deep working relationships with customers, members, peers and leaders.

Revenue Generation

  • Supervise sales staff based inside and outside in a variety of markets and through a variety of media including print, electronic and events.
  • Carry a sales territory in one or more markets based on needs of the business.
  • Set sales goals.
  • Attend major trade events and develop relationships with major companies in covered industries.
  • Oversee audience development and marketing including setting circulation goals. Approve circulation and audience development plans.
  • Oversee and work closely with marketing to develop a cohesive, results-oriented program that heightens brand recognition and sales.
  • Identify new opportunities within existing markets and new verticals.

Cost Control

  • Assist to establish and operate business within budgetary guidelines.
  • Seek cost saving opportunities.
  • Prioritize capital expenditures.
  • Provide timely, accurate and complete reports on the operating condition of the company—report on all successes/failures.


  • Manage, lead and develop employees in all sectors of the business.
  • Provide counseling and guidance to staff as needed. Addressing performance issues timely and effectively.
  • Ensure employees in all areas follow established procedures to deliver product on time and within budget.
  • Foster communications between editorial and advertising sales to develop new sales opportunities.
  • Motivate and lead a high performance team; attract, recruit and retain members of the team; provide mentoring as a cornerstone to the success of the company and individual development.
  • In conjunction with CFO, create and execute strategies for new revenue streams.


Applicants are expected to meet these qualifications to be considered for this position.

Position Qualifications/Requirements

  • Experience managing others; 3+ years in a leadership role of a professional team required.
  • Previous media management experience, preferably in business-to-business area. Experience in existing verticals desirable; 5+ years preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written skills.
  • Proven people skills are a must.
  • Frequent travel may be required.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting for long amounts of time.
  • Using technology efficiently such as computers, phones, misc. office equipment.
